Chapter 19

A couple hours later, Bryana woke up to the feeling of someone squeezing her hand. Opening her eyes, she found Brennen sitting on the edge of the bed next her. She tilted her head, giving him better access to her neck. His hand traveled down her neck and rested lightly on her stomach.

“Sorry to wake you. I just came in here to check on you.”

“Don’t be sorry.” Stretching carefully, she looked up at him. “I need to be getting up anyway.”

Before she could attempt to sit up, Brennen leaned in. His arms went behind her back and gently lifted her up into a sitting position. Bryana’s gasp of surprise had Brennen pulling back to study her face.

“Did I hurt you?”

“No. I just wasn’t expecting that.”

Brennen got up and held out his hand to her. “You ready to get up and go back downstairs?”

Nodding, Bryana took his offered hand and cautiously climbed out of bed. When he didn’t show any signs of picking her up, Bryana looked at him and raised an eyebrow. “What. You’re not going to carry me?”

Smiling, Brennen shook his head. “Nope. You need to be up and walking. I’ll be right beside you, so you don’t fall.”

With an arm around her waist, Brennen led Bryana out of the room. Slowly, they made their way down the hall toward the steps. At the top of the steps, Chelsea was waiting for them. Chelsea placed a quick kiss on Brennen’s cheek.

“I was on my way to come get you both. Bryana, Her Majesty is insisting on you and Roark marrying tonight. Roark is trying to talk her out of it. I think he wants to at least wait until you have had time to heal from your injuries. But, she is not budging.”

The three of them slowly made their way down the steps. The closer they got to the bottom, the clearer the voices became. Looking over the rail, Bryana could see Roark and Amelia sitting on the two couches facing each other. Roark was running his hands through his hair, clearly becoming frustrated with his mother. Amelia, on the other hand, was sitting there watching him with a calm expression on her face. Neither Roark nor Amelia had noticed Bryana coming down the steps.

“Give me one good reason why we have to have the ceremony now.”

Before Amelia could say anything, Bryana opened her mouth and made her presence known. “Because, you are the Crown Prince. If you, of all people, don’t follow the rules of your nation why would any of your people follow the rules?”

“What the hell are you doing out of bed?” Roark stood and moved quickly to the stairs. He glared at Bryana as she reached the bottom step.

“I woke up. Brennen and Chelsea were nice enough to help me come back down.”

“You shouldn’t be walking.” Before he could scoop Bryana into his arms, Brennen laid a hand on his shoulder.

“Actually, she needs to be up and walking. The last thing she needs right now is a blood clot or pneumonia developing.
